Temporary desk

This is a temporary desk. I put the plywood panel down as a template before cutting the real desk, made of solid ash, and Sasja sat down behind it and started using it. Check back for the real thing later this week.

Still posting last weeks achievements. The bedroom cupoards have gotten [I always thought this was an Americanism but as Shakespeare used it, I will too] doors. Made from birch plywood with a groove routed in to match the walls. They were hung yesterday after being painted over the weekend. Need a new photo here.

We have put the central beams up in the corridor, with their led lights, finishing the ceilings. Really pleased with the ash skylights.

Em on new skates

Em on new skates
Originally uploaded by Sadlr

We found a new pair of inline skates for Em, while searching for a thermos in the sales. She put them on and flew round the shop, eventually skating to the check-out. She had grown out of the last pair, but these will last her longer as they adjust to fit four shoe sizes. We never found the thermos though.

Stairs in place

The stairs fit perfectly. A couple of millimeters extra in the first and last step, but as the sizes were decided long before the floors went in we are very happy indeed. They look great too and are much easier than the aluminium ladder we've been climbing for almost a year.

Even with a temporary mould that is cut and fits fine, it's always a 'take a deep breath' moment when the oversized staircase has to be sawn to size.

Sarah on NB Warrior broke hers on Sunday so I thought I'd take a pacture of mine while it's still in one piece. It's a 1970's Papercourt Sailing Club mug, cracked but still going strong.

Paterswoldsemeer

Paterswoldsemeer
Originally uploaded by Sadlr

Claudia and Em had skated a number of times this week but today looked like being the last chance for me. Added to that the Paterswoldsemeer, where we sailed and swam all summer, was sufficiently frozen to be skated on safely. Em and I skated one lap of about 5 kilometers. Claudia -100% Dutch blood in her veins - did two large laps for a total of about 15 kms. Then we drank hot chocolate at the sailing club before being treated to a New Year's speech and a glass of champagne by the DTP Commodore.

Robland LX

Robland LX
Originally uploaded by Sadlr

After wanting one for more than ten years and saving up for the last couple of years, I found this second hand Robland LX310 on the internet. It belonged to a butcher :) in Schoonoord. Now it's ours.
Peter went with me, in a hire truck - 'met laadklep' - to help manhandle 400 kg of saw and accesories into and out of the van. Now it is in the workshop waiting to be put back together and fine tuned.

Followed by hail, then it thawed and then froze again. Now we are skating across the concrete.

Cycling to work

I've cycled to work every day this year. This morning it was minus 10 degrees. At least I didn't have to scrape the windscreen. Yes, both the van and the bike need cleaning.

Noorderhaven New Year

Noorderhaven again
Originally uploaded by Sadlr

Everywhere we tried to go froze over, even the canal in front of the workshop had 2 centimetres of ice, so we ended up in the Noorderhaven for New Year's Eve. A couple of neighbours came round and we were outside at midnight to see the fireworks and drink to the New Year's arrival. Our first Noorderhaven New Year since arriving in Groningen. Claudia and the dog don't like fireworks at all, so next year we'll try to be out of town again.
